With a passion for helping clients navigate the complexities of family law, Derek is a trusted and reliable advocate for his clients.
Derek first joined Ip & Heathfield as a trainee solicitor in September 2011 after completing his Postgraduate Certificate in Law from the prestigious University of Hong Kong. During his extensive training with the firm, Derek gained extensive experience in a wide range of family law matters and qualified as a Solicitor of the HKSAR in November 2013.
Derek has focused on specialising as a family lawyer and has experience in advising on all areas of family law including divorce and separation, ancillary relief matters, children arrangements (including that of illegitimate children), custody and access matters as well as nuptial agreements. With a primary focus on high net worth individuals, Derek represents clients from various backgrounds and ethnicities and is well-versed in dealing with assets located in different jurisdictions and applications under the Hague Convention. The nature of Derek’s practice also allows him to work alongside various other professionals including mediators, psychologists, forensic accountants and parental coordinators.
In addition to family litigation, Derek is a strong advocate towards alternate dispute resolution and has received training under the HKMAAL Accredited Mediation Course. He has also worked alongside retired Judges and senior practitioners for private financial adjudication.
Derek is deeply committed to the development of family law in Hong Kong and has participated in family law symposiums in Hong Kong, England and also Mainland China. In addition, Derek serves as an Executive Committee member for the Hong Kong Family Law Association and has been elected as its Secretary for 2022-2023. He also shares his extensive knowledge and expertise and serves as a lecturer for the both the full-time and part-time streams of the Matrimonial Practice and Procedure module with the University of Hong Kong. Derek is also a contributor to The Hong Kong Lawyer journal where he publishes insights relating to family law matters.
An aspiring playwright, Derek hopes to one day be able to share his experiences via a staged play.
